In Vogue: The Illustrated History of the World's Most Famous Fashion Magazine

In Vogue: The Illustrated History of the World's Most Famous Fashion MagazineIn Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographersĂ¢??from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named CondĂƒ© Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossusĂ¢??from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazineĂ¢??from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media.

The dangers of vintage: Sun damage

I have been thinking of the presentation of a series of posts on some of the things to look out for when you vintage and antique clothing collection. The irreversible or costly to repair issues: it may include topics such as silk, shattering the clothes moth and other insect damage, colourings that eat dust devil, dust away … .and here I have a good example. Sun damage!

Vintage dyes are not as stable as modern ones that are based on petrochemicals. Many are of natural materials and fade or color change over the years. If you want (like me) ' 40s crepe dinner dresses you may have noticed how the blue ones purple patches can enable, or grey to Brown will turn. It is a natural process and seems to be accelerated by exposure to air or Sun.

I had my vintage clothing collection began in 1980 with the 1950s party, prom and cocktail dresses – by the age of 20, 50 or the beauties hanging from the rails photo in my bedroom. I shudder to remember now that I know better, but think that it was a good thing that I have often moved and the collection soon grew so none of them would have been very exposed to the sun hanging above it – and I lived in art deco apartments too, which tend to be too dark.

In modern times many of us our clothes on clothes rails also hang-die ene side exposes to the Sun, exposing or rather a sliver of one side to the Sun. It is a frequent problem, many older clothes have sun damage but this one takes the cake.

Here is a shot of the dress separately.

And a close up of the jacket.

It's a wonderful ensemble – or rather, was ever. Silk chiffon with beaded and sequinned appliques. Fully lined – 1930s. Generally In pretty good condition except that an antiquarian on the wall for a view put-and a few years later, the color had completely changed.

So sorry!

Now, what can we do with such a problem?
Firstly, what won't work: paints. To apply dye on a piece of clothing with fade usually will result in a colored garment with uneven color, because the dye not spots faded covers, it will color the same extent. A possible exception is if a black garment of natural fibre is dyed black, but in this case a professional treatment is recommended because it is still difficult to get a good result (I think black as the most difficult of all colors to paint, to a true black instead of a charcoal).

Another problem with paints is that not all materials can be the same: for example, the silk and cotton wool will dye well, but the rayon lining less so. If there is already any repairs in the modern era, a polyester thread are used that will not dye well either, so you with a few different shades (a tip will end for telling when a garment dyed has to).

When there are small areas of fade, you could cover them by extra fabric, trims or appliques to apply. As an alternative, you could also remove the affected areas if the tissue is full (for example, in a skirt is) and there is excess substance.

Another option is to wear your vintage clothing and her ombre shadow effect with pride! Many defects are less noticeable on a garment when it is worn, and especially for evening wear where the light is not likely to be strong. Many antique and vintage clothing have issues of one kind or another and depending on how bad the damage is, it may not significantly reduces its unique and historic beauty.

This particular ensemble is now available via the webshop.

Vintage Fashion Show

With a lot of 30 s movies, fashions of 1934 is mostly fluff with a bit of  high fashion knock-offs in cast but it's a great opportunity to see a young Bette Davis combined with William Powell, with Busbey Berkeley musical numbers. Dresses by Orry-Kelly are to die for, and make up of PERC Westmore. I was dying to see this film for years and finally found a copy for sale in scooter movies. It's Fab!

New vintage

People often ask me if it is difficult to part with my vintage clothing, but I'm glad to see how they go to new homes, it means that I can go and buy some more – and regardless of how many thousands of dresses that you see, you have not seen them all.

One of the things I like about the webshop is that after a dress has sold, I still have the photos and it's nice to have a bit to remember by. Usually get the garments listed in the shopping street are not photographed Gertrude, so I thought you might like to see a few of the new Member States that during the last week. These are all available to new homes.

As you move the pointer over any image, it will tell you that the date of each, and the size-click on it to see the full image. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Amy Winehouse style

Posted by Nicole under sixties style icon
[14] Comments
On Sunday morning came the news-one of the most talented and original singer-songwriters of our time was dead.

Source of the image
The news is already a long time coming: because her first album was released, Amy has lived her life in the public interest, and her self-destructive lifestyle the subject of gossip and a large amount of media attention. Like many, I heard of its tawdry reputation long before I heard her music.
It was when my book writing in a cafe Castlemaine in February 2008 that I have a few bars of Chorus caught. I literally ran to the nearest record shop and – out of breath-two words "Amy winehouse" said. The Assistant silently gave me a copy of "back to black" and it is not my daily playlist since left.
I love her music and wish that somehow she could have found the strength and support for the fight of her demons and her addiction to combat. There was something about Amy people's history that really goat. I understand the not free, but you don't need me to point out that they are on the receiving end of huge quantities of venom.
Hard to believe, for a young woman who wanted nothing more than to write and sing of her music, and life how she wished to live, but that was. They didn't hurt anyone if I know that much, but still she was hunted. I can't even begin to imagine how that felt, especially for someone who was so sensitive-Amy explains her heart and soul for us in her music. Almost every song contains the word "tears", there is so much fear in there.
Amy and her music really hit me-I would like to express my feelings to share with you about this amazing woman, but it is a sad reality when I notice that I invite more vitriol, more of the Amy-haters to tell me how I'm wrong. Please, don't. This is my blog, and while I don't expect you agree with me that, I would appreciate if you could me and Amy, treat with respect.
So-on the good stuff-you know about Amy, her life and her music but have you thought about her style? Miss Winehouse burst on the scene with that rarest and most valuable of qualities-originality. Her look borrowed heavily from the early ' 60s girl groups like the Ronettes with heavy winged eyeliner, pale lips, big Beehive bouffant hair, but she made it her own with a modern update.

The Ronettes-image found here.
Her clothes were pure Bad Girl – some were a twist on the 1950s with pencil skirts and stilettos, ballet flats, wide cinching belts, denim cutoff shorts and strappy tops, or a mod look of the 1960s with Fred Perry knitted tops and jeans. Some were more ' 70s or ' 80s polyester, falling off a shoulder Flashdance style. They successfully updated vintage cans and made them look fresh and new. Her look was simple and sexy, a bit too Frisky on time – reveal meat despite the inclement English weather.

Notable was how strong and consistent hairstyle was – today it is common for singers to change their appearance ala Madonna, in an attempt to remain relevant but Amy had a look and they stuck with it. It is very recognizable and iconic – making it a very simple look to imitate, all you need is the great dark haircut, the winged eyeliner, towering high heels and a skimpy outfit.
She was consistently because Amy the real deal, authentic to the core. The genuine article in this world of counterfeit goods and manufactured pop stars.
So Amy and had her look over at the world of fashion – which, let's be honest, is always looking for something new and exciting – she licked it.
Amy achieved something incredibly rare: they dragged us almost single-handedly from the 90s Jennifer Aniston with our flat, straight hairs. Her penchant for big hair is still reverberating and will do for some time. She is the reason that I can wear my big ' 40s rolls a few centimeters above my head and compliments not received "crazy lady" tail. She is the reason that many of us like to wear flowers in our hair.
Amy changed the way we make up also look-not so long ago I had an argument with a MAC makeup lady who was convinced that I, like everyone else, pale pink lipstick (despite her determination that I with hot pink instead left). Winged eyeliner signaled on the cover of Vogue magazine and walkways everywhere.
And Lastly, Amy has had an impact on the acceptance of tattoos: particularly among young women. She has helped the styles of the 1950s of tattoos to revive.

Amy's music and style will now stand alone, and no longer be overshadowed by her lifestyle. A true original, we will never see her like again. I hope she finds peace now.

Contest winners: Williamstown way we wear fair this weekend.

Congratulations to the following winners-you all get a double pass to visit the fair vintage this weekend. Please email me your postal address asap-or if you prefer, you are welcome to pick them up from the store this week.

Not surprisingly, Bates was the most popular character: showing how attractive a little mystery and integrity. Secondly, to modern lass in the making, Lady Sybil. A few of you mentioned Thomas and O'Brien: if very worn as they are, they offer a lot of the drama. A little too much drama, if you saw last night episode ... oh, how I wished for O'Brien to her comeuppence!

There is so much to love about this show, fantastic costumes, beautiful interiors and beautiful gardens – there's a lot a lot of characters who are all interesting in their own way – my favourite is probably the dowager, Lord Grantham mother Violet. Maggie Smith is so delicious hateful-I wish they were on the podium, err frame more often! Her nausea is more used to a life of privilege and have a high opinion of himself. She is essentially harmless and I like it especially when she along with her daughter in law Lady Cora in cohoots.

So who are the winners? Carli of Konadlicious for siding with me on the Dowager and Maryanne Kelly for the wonderful qualities of Mr. Bates summarized. I also have an extra pair of tickets for Louise Atkinson, for the introduction of a good word for Matthew Crawley. Well done to you all! Hope you have a great time on the vintage market.

Photo source-and many more beautiful images if you care to look.
